Our Roots:  During the late '60's and early '70's, I became distrustful of the
pet food industry.  The more I learned the more alarmed I became about how
processed, low-grade ingredients used in these foods, touted as "vet
approved" and "healthy," could negatively affect the health of my pets.  It was
then that I began feeding my dogs and cats foods prepared in my own kitchen
using wholesome ingredients purchased at the farmers' markets, food co-ops
and other human food markets.  In the 90's a handful of elite pet food
companies emerged that truly did offer superior nutrition for pets.  It was great
to be able to rely on a basic commercial diet for our pets, however, I continued
to supplement with home prepared training treats and extra tempting morsels
to improve the health of my animals.

After my husband and I retired and moved to Oregon we were shocked to
discover the deplorable conditions and vast numbers of animals that were
killed twice a week at our local shelter.  We simply had to do something to help
and so Empathy Program Lab Rescue was born.  Originally, it was dedicated
to rescuing Labrador Retrievers but quickly morphed into all breeds of dogs
and cats, too.  

Seeking a way to offset the ever increasing drain on our limited retirement
income, I considered my 35-plus years of experience with animals and all that I
had learned about good nutrition for them.  

“Why not put it to use making healthy animal treats?”  

So, falling back on a wealth of pet nutrition knowledge Top Dog Bakery was
born.  While rescue and a sound foundation about pet nutrition are our roots,  
we haven't stopped there.
